Concept Mapping
Concept Mapping is a strategy using a graphic organizer that helps
students organize and symbolize knowledge about a subject or a topic. Concept
maps start with a main idea or concept and then are divided out to demonstrate
how that idea can be broken down into more detailed topics. This strategy is exceptionally effective with
visual learners.
There are many different types of concept map graphic organizers
available on the web from very basic to more detailed.
Additionally, there are free computer programs available on the web that will
generate concept maps.
To Use Concept Mapping:
1. Ask students to create a mind map of what
they already know about the topic.
2. After the students have had time to work individually,
they should then work with a partner to build on what they have learned
individually.
3. As a possible third step, you could have
the students create a table concept map using chart paper, the board, or smart
board.
4. As a culmination activity have the
students review the work of other students in the class and find patterns in
the maps.
As an assessment tool, use the student created work to evaluate what needs to be re-taught or extended.
