STAR ~ Math Strategy
The STAR math strategy
is a mnemonic that can help students use strategy cues to complete general
problem-solving steps and related sub-steps. This is especially helpful with word problems.
What does STAR mean?
S – Search the word problem
T – Translate the words
into an equation using a picture or counters/manipulatives
A – Answer the problem: calculate
the answer to the problem
R – Review the solution:
Re-read the problem
Ask yourself does my answer make sense?
Check your math
Make sure that steps are modeled and that students have plenty of opportunities for practice before being asked to use any strategy independently.
