Story Maps
Story Maps are a great strategy
using graphic organizers to help students learn the elements of a story or
book. Story maps improve comprehension,
provide an outline for identifying the elements of a story, and help students
of different skill levels organize material and ideas efficiently. This strategy is exceptionally effective with
visual learners.
There are many different
types of story map graphic organizers available on the web from very basic to
more detailed.
To Use Story Maps:
1. Discuss the main parts of a story: character,
setting, plot and theme or beginning middle and end.
2. Give each student a blank story map graphic
organizer and model how to fill it in.
3. Assign students their own story to read, have
them complete their story map as they read.
4. After they read the story, they should fill in
any missing parts to the story map.
